While farm-related activities continue to be the primary sources of income for most rural households in India, there is a growing diversification into non-farm activities to supplement family income. For example, India has ~7 million rural artisans contributing to a rich tradition of handicrafts and handloom products and the sector plays an important role in the country’s economy. Delivery of quality education, skill development and capacity building can help transform the rural economy and generate sustainable livelihoods. If leveraged effectively, modern-day ICT technologies such as mobile devices, high-speed broadband and cloud services can bring about sustainable improvements in rural livelihoods through large increases in off-farm income.

InterGram: InterGram is an eCommunity center that utilizes high-speed broadband as a medium to deliver a variety of relevant services in the area of education, financial services, agriculture, ecommerce and healthcare to rural populations in India. InterGram is a cost-effective amalgamation of advanced technologies such as virtual reality (VR/AR), web sensors (IoT), cloud signage and artificial intelligence (AI/ML). The objective is to catalyze the local economy by stimulating job creation, increasing household income, improving digital skills and expanding general awareness. The objective of the InterGram initiative is to have a significant positive impact on the quality of life of India’s rural population by enabling them to experience the true dividends of a digital economy. Crosslinks and its partners are setting up multiple InterGram centers in remote and rural areas of India starting with Odisha state.

SaroVR: The Covid-19 pandemic has adversely impacted the rural artisanal community. Crosslinks is setting up SaroVR eCommerce Facilitation Centers in rural India to promote local handicrafts and handloom products using online channels in India and abroad. SaroVR centers utilize AR/VR technologies to allow rural artisans to create realistic and attractive 3D visuals of their products. SaroVR centers allow craftpersons to focus on their core skills and competencies, while outsourcing the business aspects such as online marketing, distribution, order fulfilment and customer support to trained village entrepreneurs, predominantly women. SaroVR enables effective national and global marketing of products made by local artisans thereby expanding livelihood opportunities and household incomes of the rural poor.
